My Dear Friends,
When Martha contacted me with information about the Celebtrate Life reunion, I was really hoping to be able to be with you. However, circumstances are such that it is impossible for me to be there. I'm really going to miss seeing you all. Anyhow, I thought I'd catch you up on what's been happening with our family the last 30 years or so.
As you may remember, I married in 1975, and Randi and I live in Mt Gilead, Ohio now. I am pastor of Mt Gilead Baptist Church and have been for 16 years. Randi is teaching kindergarten. We have a son, Ryan, who is a senior at Ohio State, and who plays at least semi-professionally in a band. Our daughter, Erin, will graduate from Mt Gilead High School in June.
We have been blessed in so many ways as a family even while going through the usual good and not-so-good times we all experience, and for that we are so very thankful.
I remember being in Celebrate Life, and the hard work we put into it, and how rewarding it was. At the time I believe the song that was most meaningful was In Remembrance, and it still holds great meaning in my life. And I remember Doris McCubbin and that beautiful voice of hers, and the tremendous witness to the faithfulness and power of Christ she was in our community. Without a doubt, God was doing something special then.
As I said, I would really love to have been with you. Perhaps Randi and I will be able to drop in one Sunday this summer and see my dear friends of long standing. I'd also love to hear from any of you who would like to write. Via e-mail it is mgbaptist@redbird.net. My sddress is 6476 Co. Rd. 76 Mt Gilead, OH 43338.
Have fun, and sing a song for me. I really love you all.
Blessings,
Lawrence Combs
Dear Baptist Tabernacle:
We did thoroughly enjoy our day with you! We all remarked about how "put-together" you were in your plans. We have NEVER worked with a church committee who worked so well together, had their plans in place, and carried them out with such precision! Congratulations! (Usually, if there is a committee of more than one, it becomes chaos! haha...)
Your server for the day, Brad, has been around us for a long time...he and my daughter, Erin, attended first grade together, and have been friends all through school. He and Erin both attend U of L, and both work for me often.
I will pass along your accolades for Chef John's great cooking....he works very hard to make sure everything is fresh and prepared just for you the day of your event. I am glad you were able to enjoy the "leftovers", and had plenty to share.
Your billing is complete! We sincerely appreciate your timely payments....can we hire you to tell all of our clients how it supposed to be done? haha...
Have a great spring! We look forward to seeing you soon at our Garden Room Cafe again. ("Duo Louisville" will be playing at our Mother's Day Brunch on Sunday, May 8th.)
Thanks again for your kind support of my catering services!
Yours truly,
Gumby
Linda Siglar Edwards sent a beautiful card with tulips on it.
The printing on the card said: Dreams that rest within the heart are hopes that God has planted ... And when He brings our dreams to life a special joy is granted. Inside the card, the text continues: God has given you so many reasons to rejoice today--it's great to share the happiness with you!
Her letter reads:
Dear "Celebrate Life" reunion choir,
My heart warms as I think back 30 years ago about all of you who were in the youth choir at Baptist Tabernacle. You all had a zeal and energy and were truly a delight to lead. You all were so willing to work hard and that we did for months. There was such an excitement about the musical. If my memory serves me right we toured it to Zion Baptist Church in Henderson, KY or was that the musical "Lightshine"?
There was an amazing grace upon the choir in those months for by that time Doris became sick. The Lord was near to her and all of us as she sang the solo that must have been written for her especially. Gloria, may the Lord bless you mightily in the singing of that beautiful song and touch you with even greater depths of His healing.
Friends, I thank the Lord for the privilege and honor to have known you all and to serve you and the Lord at Baptist Tabernacle.
I love you all!
Linda Edwards
Dear Bruce:
I got a chance to say hello to Gloria and tell her what a wonderful job she had done. I was so hesitant about coming, fearing that no one would remember the face or the name and apparently several others felt the same way. But when I saw the old gang it was like looking back thirty years and not one person looked different. The only one I may not have recognized was you, until you smiled. You and Debbie have the same smile.
Bruce, thank you for putting so much effort into this project and for having the insight of knowing that this was an attainable dream. It was a very moving and emotional experience for me. I will always treasure my memories at Baptist Tabernacle and my friends.
I do plan to visit.
Keep in touch.

Dear Friends,
I really enjoyed the mailing with all of the old newsletter/bulletin inserts. Reading those really brought back a host of good memories--of the Teen Center, of Brother Joe Williams, Delores Crowe, Joyce Austin, and a number of great kids who were a part of my ministry there.
I wish it were possible for me to be with you on the 17th. We are in the last week of doing 40 Days of Purpose as a church and I must be here. Please know that I have unearthed my copy of the musical and have been remembering our performance.
He sends regards to [20 people he mentions by name] and to so many others that I remember with great fondness.
If there is a copy of the 1974 performance, I would love to have one. ...
I am now in my thirtieth year of ministry, nineteen of which have been here in Missouri. I met my wife while at Southern and she assisted me many times at the Teen Center. Beverley is a social worker with the DFS of Missouri. We have two daughters, ages 26 and 22.
I wish you well on the reunion. I still carry memories of Doris McCubbin and Lynn Ramsey, and know that their spirit will be there with those who gather on the 17th. If possible, I would love to have a print out or a recording of Gloria Milam's testimony.
Again my best to all, and my prayers for all of you as you share on the 17th.
In His grace,
Jim Guffie
Dear BT, Here is a brief synopsis of what I have done since I left Baptist Tabernacle. At around 16 years old, my family moved to Shively and joined Shively Baptist Church. I graduated from Portland Christian Hight School in 1979 and then from Campbellsville College in December, 1984 with a degree in music education. After college I worked at Willis Music in Jefferson Mall and taught private piano until I got a teaching position at St. Rita and St. Luke School out off of Preston Highway. I also was organist/choirmaster at Grace Lutheran Church. In November of 1987, I trained with American Airlines to be a Flight Attendant. I moved to Schaumburg, IL, right outside of Chicago. In 1988, I moved to the Boston area, specifically Marblehead, MA to fly internationally with AA. In May, 2001, I became a Flight Service Manager until November, 2002 when I returned to line flying. In 2002, I became confirmed at Trinity Church in the City of Boston, an Episcopalian church. I also became involved facilitating discipleship classes. I am sorry I cannot be there to meet up with all my old friends and choir members. It would have been a great experience to see and sing with you all. I appreciate all the time and effort that was involved in tracking everyone down. Doris' death certainly touched my life as a teenager. When tragedy and sadness hits, it does draw people together. We draw strength from one another to help us cope and move on. At times, we can even sense the presence of those we have lost around us. Dealing with the deaths of Doris and Lynn certainly helped shape our community, but life moves on. Mrs. McCubbins asked me to sing "Pass It On" at Doris' funeral. That event certainly helped shape my life as an adult. At this point in my life, those deaths, though meaningful, are just a small part of my life experiences. On September 11, 2001, I lost 11 coworkers, several of them friends in the attack on the World Trade Center in New York City. This tragedy still haunts me and others, yet it too will become more bearable with time. It is great to remember and honor those in our lives that we loved and laughed and cried with. I think singing the musical is a tribute to life and love and the resilience we have through God that allows life to go on. At some point we can eventually do what the song says.....let them rest, let them rest, for a while. Michael Austin
